Santa

Over the weekend Desi was talking to her sibling about Santa, she was telling them Santa was a fictional character. I looked at Jim and he looked at me, we haven't had this talk with her yet. We quickly quieted her and told her we would talk later. She has been on to us for a few years, asking lots of questions and just doubting the whole idea. I started asking other parents around Christmas time what age they told their kids and average was 8-9 so I figured we would tell her next year, I guess she had different plans. I felt my parents waited a little too long before they shared the secret with me. I felt I had been defending Santa's honor on the playground all for nothing, I felt like a idiot(I was in 5Th grad).
Jim had the duty of explaining, he is so much better with words than I am. He first asked if Santa's not real, than who puts out gifts and fills stockings. Desi said mom and dad, and you buy stuff secretly and hide it until Christmas eve. He told her she was right, and started to explain that although Santa as a person in a red suit who lives at the north pole is fictional, Santa's spirit is alive though others that share gifts and the love of Jesus with others. Jim asked if she believed in the Easter bunny and she said no, but she did believe in the tooth fairy, which I thought was funny, out of all the characters, the tooth fairy I find the hardest to believe.
She took it really well and is excited to be part of what she calls the parents secret, and next year she gets to help plan, shop, hide and stuff stockings.
